As school children during the first half of the twentieth century making their way into worlds that they hope to occupy and make sense of, Filipinos were taught to see, think, and know. Tutelage was a modest exhibition that focused on how they were taught to think of themselves as subject to American colonial, Commonwealth, and early Philippine Republican rule. In assembling school texts and their accompanying images crafted by a generation of artists represented by such individuals as Fernando and Pablo Amorsolo, the visitor was challenged to view education as an inherently ideological proposition.
